The Baltimore News Collaborative is a partnership that includes The Baltimore Banner, Baltimore Beat, Maryland Public Television, Morgan State University and WYPR. Funding from the Annie E. Casey Foundation supported the launch of the collaborative in 2023. Each newsroom retains full editorial control and independence of all content produced through the collaborative.

The Baltimore News Collaborative allows these five nonprofit newsrooms to brainstorm and maximize their reporting strengths to propel stories about Baltimore-area youth. The goal is to raise the voices of the city’s youth, shedding light on the unique challenges they face and those who are navigating solutions. Reporters and editors involved in the project strive to represent accurately the diverse communities they are engaged with to better serve the public with a fuller narrative of historically overlooked communities. The collaborative draws on best practices of successful journalism collaboratives nationwide.
According to the Solutions Journalism Network, which also supported the collaborative’s launch, the news too often misses “how people are trying to solve problems and what we can learn from their successes or failures.” The Baltimore News Collaborative reports on the experiences of young people in Baltimore, considering their strengths and aspirations without perpetuating harmful narratives about historically excluded communities. This helps avoid stigmatizing youth while providing rigorous reporting on how communities respond to their challenges.
The Baltimore News Collaborative is creating a voter guide informed by young people aged 14–24. The project is currently gathering input through an online survey and by hosting two listening sessions.
